Egypt to hold Alaa and Gamal Mubarak another 15 days (VIDEO)

Egypt has extended the detentions of Alaa and Gamal Mubarak, sons of former President Hosni Mubarak, for another 15 days, the state-run Middle East News Agency said, citing the prosecutor.

Meanwhile, the ousted Egyptian leader is too ill to be transferred to a military hospital as had been planned, the attorney general said Tuesday citing the interior ministry.

Mubarak and his sons were first ordered detained on April 13 for 15 days, after being summoned for questioning about alleged embezzlement of public funds and attacks on protesters during the uprising that ended Mubarak’s three-decade rule.

Mubarak is under hospital arrest in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, where he was taken April 12 after suffering an apparent heart attack while being questioned by investigators. 

On Apr. 15, the public prosecutor ordered that he be transferred to a military hospital when well enough. But Interior Minister Mansur Essawy said Tuesday that Mubarak's health status "indicated the need for continuous monitoring which is only available in hospitals with highly skilled personnel and equipment… which does not currently allow his transfer," Agence France-Presse reported. 

The 82-year-old is suffering from a heart condition that can lead to cardiac arrest and requires intensive care, according to a statement from the prosecutor’s office.

Mubarak's own period of 15-day period of detention was extended for another 15 days on April 22.

In Cairo, Habib el-Adly, the former interior minister in Mubarak's regime, is already undergoing trial on charges he ordered state security forces to shoot unarmed protesters during the uprising a few months ago.

More than 800 people were reportedly killed during the 18 days of unrest that led to Mubarak's ouster.

El-Adly, who has pleaded not guilty, faces a death sentence if convicted.
