Archimedes figures in today's Geo Quiz:The early Greek mathematician and inventor was born in a seaport city on the island of Sicily. The city was once part of Greater Greece which included the coastal areas of southern Italy. So we're looking for this city, where Archimedes came up with his many inventions and scientific ideas. Some of Archimedes schemes were so fantastic they've taken on myth like proportions.

And as it turns out in this week's episode of the Discovery Channel series Mythbusters, one of Archimedes' inventions has attracted the attention of the First Family:

One of the largest science projects ever can only be requested by one man. how are you? I am a big fan of mythbusters. Really. I am and so are the girls. I thing that we've got a big one that hasn't been thoroughly tested. Which one is that? It is Archimedes' solar ray. The pressure's on man. Figure this out and report back to me. We're on it!

Geo Answer:

The answer is the city of Syracuse. The seaport on the island of Sicily was once part of Greater Greece and home to the early Greek scientist Archimedes. Anchor Lisa Mullins speaks with the co-hosts of the Mythbusters television show Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman who, at President Obama's request, recently re-tested the myth of the Archimedes Solar Ray. The myth says that Archimedes set fire to an invading fleet using only mirrors and the rays of the sun.
