Obama said the work of reviving the U.S. economy is becoming more urgent every day and because that work must be done on a global scale, he said Bill Richardson is uniquely suited to be Secretary of Commerce. Under President Clinton, Richardson served as Energy Secretary and U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. He has a reputation as being a high-flying global diplomat and it's also led some Latinos to see him as the best candidate for the higher profile position of Secretary of State. Obama was asked today if Latinos would see Richardson's appointment as a consolation prize and Obama said the job of Commerce Secretary will be critical at this time. Diversity was on full display when Richardson spoke today; Richardson thanked Latinos for their trust and their support of Obama. This election showed the potency of Latino voters, Richardson said.
