Kandahar confrontation

Military analysts have been expecting an assault on Kandahar since winter, but only recently did the Taliban attack, staging what NATO forces admit was a perfectly executed raid on a prison in Kandahar. There's now worry that the Taliban has taken control of the town just across the river from Kandahar. Today an Afghan spokesman gave little detail about the situation. If the President's office was vague, other sources were contradictory and some US forces have said they've found no Talban in the area. The Taliban for their part asserted they have control of surrounding regions and are preparing to take over Kandahar again. This local resident says he fears for his life, and hundreds of families have fled surrounding areas. As night fell, residents heard NATO forces flying overhead and they're bracing for a major battle.
