Alleged 9-11 mastermind faces arraignment

(Why is this not just another routine court appearance?) This is the first time we’ll see these guys after five years that he’s been with the CIA. (He’s been at Guantanamo the whole time?) No, he arrived at Guantanamo in December of 2006 and before that we don’t really know where he was. The CIA had him somewhere overseas. They now tell him he underwent waterboarding. KSM has confessed to being the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks. The other guys before him have been small fries, according to him. (Is there any chance they’ll reject the process itself and not work with an attorney?) Everyone involved is a military officer, even their defense attorneys. Whether or not they cooperate is one of the questions which will be raised. (It’s not just the detainees who have taken issue with the proceedings, but also military officers who say this is illegal.) There are some who believe they should be tried on American soil in American courts. The Bush administration has created these military commissions because they might need to use evidence which needs to be kept secret and it would be made public and there were certain tactics used on these men which would shock public consciousness. (What are the limits that have been put on journalists at Guantanamo?) The arraignment will not be seen. The way the world is going to learn of this is through journalists and legal analysts. We’ll be behind a thick glass wall and listening to a feed so they can mute the feed at any time.
