Three trillion dollar war

(That amount is quite a bit higher than the Appropriations Bill from Congress meant to support the operations. How much has Congress authorized so far?) $600 billion for the Iraq War and $800 billion if you include Afghanistan. When we’re talking about my figure, that’s not just the budgetary costs but the money beyond. This is a more reasonable estimate. (so for instance, our analysis begins with the amount appropriated but we’re spending $12 million a month upfront and we look at Defensive Dept. scenarios for leaving Iraq. But the really big costs are the costs for paying for disability and health care for the 40% of Iraq vets who are likely to come back from Iraq with disabilities, mental or physical. That was the experience we had in the very short, one-month long First Gulf War. that’s $4.3 million a month. These increase and go on over time, so this will be money spent over the next 40-60 years. This is an unfunded entitlement of over $6 billion dollars, none of which is accounted for in the federal budget. So when you hear the $600 billion dollars, that’s just the case of the money currently being spent. (Let’s move to the hypothetical: we’re talking about a veteran who’s done two tours in Iraq, he’s been in some IED explosions, suffered some severe concussions, but no major wounds. After he is discharged, what will he cost the US Treasury?) We don’t know because it will depend on how the problems manifest themselves, and those problems might not manifest right away. Two years after coming back he might start to get dizzy from traumatic brain damages. Almost surely, a very large number of these people will suffer from disabilities termed to be as a result of war. The First Gulf War has provided many examples of that. (You are an opponent of the war. is your opposition based economy or ideology?) We were very careful and upfront about our opposition to the war, and that made us be more careful and conservative about our estimates. That’s why our numbers have held up under scrutiny, and it’s tough to come up with a figure under $3 trillion dollars.
