The European Union has spent the last few years hardening its borders and paying neighboring countries like Turkey and Libya to stop people from crossing the Mediterranean to claim asylum. This means that people fleeing countries like Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan may spend years trying multiple routes to Europe, with no luck.
