Brazilian artist goes from fighting fires to elevating Black portraiture

Growing up in Brazil as a Black man, Dalton Paula didn’t see a lot of people who looked like him in movies and on television. Now, a visual artist, with work showing in the museums of Sao Paulo and New York City, he creates paintings, photos and installations that preserve the memory of long-lost historical Black figures in Brazil. Reporter Gisele Regatao visits Dalton Paula’s home studio in central Brazil, where he has set up a school for other aspiring artists.
