Vieux Farka Touré of Mali helped produce the music that accompanied the World Cup in 2010. His latest album, 'Mon Pays' (My Country), dropped earlier this year and he stopped by The World recently to perform 'Ay Bakoy,' the last track.
The song was recorded by JeConte and the Mali All-Stars and a host of other well-known Malian musicians including Khaira Arby and Vieux Farka Toure.
Idan Raichel and Vieux Farka Touré are bestselling artists in their respective countries: Israel and Mali. A chance encounter at an airport in Germany led to a collaboration that is now out on CD titled "The Touré-Raichel Collective."
The vuvuzela was heard at every World Cup match in South Africa. Thousands of them in unison were annoying and dangerous to the ears. But there were pleasing sounds as well. Malian musician Vieux Farka Toure played in Johannesburg.
