Javier Pineda emigrated from Mexico to Summit County, Colorado, when he was 12 with his family. He learned how to snowboard in high school, but he rarely saw other people of color on the slopes (88% of skiers and riders are white). Now, he’s working to change that with Oso Outdoors, a program that provides free snowboarding lessons to adults in the Black and Latino community especially Spanish speakers who identify with the immigrant experience.
