The underlying problem in francophone Africa

Soaring prices and a looming global food crisis spell added hardship in Africa because of the continent’s dependence on oil and grain imports from both Ukraine and Russia. But in francophone countries, this merely compounds an underlying problem that’s been around much longer: France’s domination of its 12 former colonies, especially around monetary policy. To many, the relationship known as Françafrique is a byword  for neocolonialism that Paris has quietly exerted for over sixty years, and they’ve had enough. Alexa Dvorson reports from the Senegalese capital, Dakar.
