As China prospers, residents increasingly demand more rights, freedoms

China's economic prosperity has opened the world to its people. But that openness has meant many of them are demanding the rights and freedoms they see residents of other successful countries enjoying. But so far, the Communist Party has been slow to offer up reforms, despite the people's demands.

French soccer player, wrongly jailed after 2007 riots, trying to get life back on course

Mara Kanté, a French Muslim soccer player, found himself in jail for nearly two years after an anonymous witness claimed he saw Kanté firing a gun during riots in largely Muslim suburbs back in 2007. The witness eventually recanted, and Kanté was freed, but he's still trying to pick up the pieces.

Beit Safafa residents protest Jerusalem's plan to build a highway through their town

Highway construction is rarely popular with the people whose neighborhood the highway must go through. In a small, largely Palestinian town outside of Jerusalem, residents are organizing to try and stop a highway that will have little benefit to them from ripping up their neighborhood.

One year ago, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman while walking in a gated community. That much is agreed. Zimmerman says his conduct was lawful under Florida's Stand Your Ground law. Prosecutors disagree. But either way, activists are working to change the law.

A 30-year-old Palestinian man, jailed after being accused of hurling a rock at an Israeli citizen, died in Israeli custody. Palestinians say he was tortured; Israelis say an investigation is ongoing. Now, some are wondering if this will lead to another intifada.

A car bomb in Damascus killed at least 72 people on Thursday. The attack is said to be one of the worst to hit Syria's capital city since the start of the two-year-conflict. Though critics say the opposition against Syria's president is divided, their efforts are slowly moving into the capital city.
