Todd Akin, (R-Mo.) a candidate for the U.S. Senate, over the weekend explained that he would ban abortion and didn't believe an exception was necessary in cases of rape -- because he's heard that women's bodies can shut down their reproductive systems and prevent becoming pregnant if they're "legitimately" raped.

Young, undocumented immigrants now able to apply for temporary quasi-legal residency

Under a new program announced by President Barack Obama in June, illegal immigrants brought to this country by their parents, at a young age, are now eligible to apply for deferral of deportation for two years, with the possibility of renewal. That allows them to live and work in the U.S., legally.

Pennsylvania awaits verdict on state's new voter ID law

A judge this week is expected to rule on the legality of Pennsylvania's new voter ID law. Conservatives say people are required to produce ID for many aspects of daily life, and voting should be no different. Opponents say as many as 800,000 voters don't have proper ID. Both sides have vowed to appeal if need-be.

Both Republicans, Democrats seem pleased with Romney's VP pick, Paul Ryan

Over the weekend, Mitt Romney announced that he'd chosen Paul Ryan as his running mate in the upcoming presidential election. And while Republicans praised the pick as bold and game-changing, and something that would rally the conservative base, Democrats sought to paint him as out of touch and, perhaps worse, as the ideological leader of a deeply unpopular U.S. Congress.

It was a mixed bag Friday morning when the latest labor report was released. Jobs were up, but so was unemployment. And both Republicans and Democrats were moving to capitalize politically on the mixed message. One bright point, though, was that manufacturing jobs are growing faster than at any point in almost 30 years.
