Syria signals its acceptance of U.N.-backed six-step proposal to end violence

United Nations special envoy Kofi Annan says Syria has agreed to his six-point plan that he hopes will bring about an end to the year-long violence in the country. It's already claimed more than 8,000 lives, according to U.N. estimates.

Amnesty International issued the 50th edition of its annual death penalty report this week, after finding that overall executions increased from 2010, despite a decline in the number of countries conducting executions. It also found that fewer death sentences were handed down than in the previous year.

In Korea, trees planted in Mongolia bring hopes for fewer dust storms

South Korea a few times a year will be wracked with terrible dust storms carried on the jet stream from Mongolia's Gobi Desert. The yellow, talc-like sand is born up by winds and then carried for miles until it causes asthma attacks in Seoul. But Koreans are hoping newly planted trees will help put an end to that.
