As the Republican Party prepares to nominate its first Mormon candidate for president next week, there's growing interest in Mormon practice -- especially young Mormons serving missions around the world. Though numbers are down from the 1990s, many young Church members are still going abroad.

Not a bad report, considering you only used essentially one source. However you missed a huge factor in doing a mission: Prestige in the Church, not only for the missionary but for the family and the ward. That is a gigantic motivator. There are women who wont consider marrying a man who isnt an RM (Returned Missionary) and women traditionally dont date men they dont plan to marry. Granted this is one faction in the church that feels this way but it is the party line. Of course the Mormons didnt share this with you. I hope this addresses the puzzlement you seemed to feel about motivation.
