The question has arisen why Obama's position was evolving for 4 years, and it suddenly hatched at the start of his re-election campaign. It surely is a new campaign strategy to harness 100% of the gay vote, and reports today on other news channels say that political contributions to Obama's campaign are surging in - apparently from the gay community.
There is no question that Obama will lose voters for his position, but, apparently, he banks to offset the loses - given the boisterous style of gay groups and activities.

The gay marriage issue is blown by strong cross-winds across the political spectrum, and Obama's evolution into a "Yes" for gay marriage is certainly not a "Golden Egg." But we have to wait and see if that "Egg" turns out to be "golden plated," or if he will get it in the face!
