A 19th-century fresco of Jesus Christ has hung in the Sanctuary of Mercy Church in northeastern Spain for more than 100 years. But parishioners are reeling after the beloved painting was found defaced. What was first called a case of vandalism has since been identified as one of the worst art restoration projects ever.

I don't really see what the problem is. It looks like she did a great job. Her restoration is even better than the original.

It is totally out out of the original I just wish it was never restored and just leave it alone. It is very obvious the old one is much better even fading away than the new restoration done recently.

News UPDATE: Due to a flock of new church attendees all gathered to see the botched touch-up the church started charging admittance to see the painting. Well the woman who did the botch-job is now suing the church for royalties (if you can believe it.) It's utterly crazy!

Dear PRI: a fresco is not a canvas. A fresco is painted into the fresh stucco. Looking at the photograph, this is not a fresco either - but painted directly onto the wall of the church. So, as you report, the painting cannot have been returned to the church, because the old woman would have to have taken the whole wall home with her.

The intention is good, but the outcome is a disaster. They should seek help from professionals. There's no undo button for this. Very poor judgement and decision! The damage is done, for me, I just leave the woman alone and learn from her mistake.

Take her crayons away then put her in the corner. How could anyone even 'think' they are doing right by the picture when they make such a mess of it? Yikes!
