Arts advocate critical of Obama's Turnaround Arts Initiative for select U.S. schools

President Barack Obama's administration rolled out a new program that seeks to turn around underperforming schools by integrating the arts into the core curriculum of each school. But a former federal education official and arts advocate said it's the wrong approach to funding arts education.

Thank you, Diane Ravitch! The arts are not only basic, but ESSENTIAL,and every child needs to have exposure to visual art, dance, music and theater exploration and expression. We need an attitude shift about this in our schools and communities and leadership at the state and local levels that supports this. Our country will be in danger of losing our creative soul if we don't.

14.7 million? wow!
Our small friends of group at McPherson elementary renovated 3 rooms into an art studio and stocked it with initial supplies for approx. $1500. We teamed up with Artreach at Lillstreet and started out first after school class (more to come in the fall).
Imagine what we could do with millions - oh, I know - maybe a full-time art teacher during the day.
Government spending is out of control - tell them we'd be happy to share how to get things done with less.
