FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

MINNEAPOLIS, Jan 24, 2012 — Public Radio International (PRI) announces the addition of CBC Radio's "Day 6" to its weekend current affairs and arts and entertainment lineup. A news magazine for today's savvy and informed American audience, "Day 6" takes each week's biggest stories -- from news headlines to pop culture -- and explores them in unexpected ways. Irreverent columnists and playful use of sound and texture gives "Day 6" a healthy dose of humor and charm. Host Brent Bambury, a seasoned radio and television journalist skilled at giving dynamic interviews and keen analysis, embodies the show's energetic pace and sharp wit.

Produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC), "Day 6" currently airs on PRI affiliate stations KUOW/Seattle, WFPL/Louisville, WBEZ/Chicago, KWMR/Point Reyes-California and WAMU-HD3/Maryland, with new stations to be announced in the coming months.

"'Day 6' and Brent Bambury are bringing a different twist to the week's news, sometimes attacking it directly, sometimes finding a new or unexpected angle," said Todd Mundt, Program Director at WFPL in Louisville. "Some of the stories won't show up anywhere else on public radio, and that's refreshing too. The interviews are pointed and thoughtful, and the show sounds snappy, aware and connected."

Sean Aucoin, Continuity and Acquisitions Manager at WBEZ in Chicago, says "Day 6" is an exciting addition to his station's weekend line-up as it "brings fresh content with an energetic pace and sound to our Saturday afternoons. Host Brent Bambury asks the questions that we/listeners want to hear. The show succeeds in blending energy and life with news and culture creating a program that is both thoughtful and fun."

The tremendous amount of positive listener feedback "Day 6" generated at stations like WFPL and WBEZ during piloting was critical to considering it for wider distribution in the U.S., according to PRI’s Senior Director of Content Development and Strategy, Michael Arnold. "Listeners are an important part of the mix when we're testing shows in various markets," said Arnold. "We know from listeners and stations that Brent Bambury's skills as a host will make this program an energizing addition to any station's schedule. The format of the program fits well with people's busy weekend routine. PRI is very happy to expand its CBC relationship with this wonderful new program."

CBC's Executive Director of Radio and Audio, Chris Boyce adds, "We at CBC Radio are very proud to join PRI in presenting 'Day 6' with Brent Bambury to our American public radio listeners. 'Day 6' has become a must-listen show for Canadians with its surprising take on the week's news and its eclectic blend of journalism, opinion and humor. We're thrilled that ‘Day 6’ will join 'Q' with Jian Ghomeshi, 'As it Happens' and 'WireTap' in the American marketplace."

In its role of providing global perspectives and diverse voices to American listeners on air, and online, PRI began its distribution partnership with the CBC in 2006. "Day 6," the fourth show from the CBC to be distributed in the U.S. exclusively by PRI, rounds out the public media organization’s award-winning portfolio of global and national news, current affairs, talk, arts and music programming.

About Public Radio International®
Celebrated as a driver of innovation in public media, PRI was founded in 1983 to diversify and expand the content available on public platforms, enabling U.S. listeners to "hear a different voice™" and to connect with one another and the larger world. PRI leads by identifying critical but unmet content needs and partnering with producers, stations, digital networks and funders to develop multi-platform resources to meet those needs. By creating an environment in which innovation can thrive, PRI supports the creation and distribution of content that would otherwise be unavailable and that brings new voices, global journalism and cultural perspectives to the American public. PRI content is available on pri.org and via podcasts, and is broadcast on broadcast on 837 public radio stations. Nearly 12 million people access PRI content each week through these sources.

MINNEAPOLIS, May 2, 2011 -- Public Radio International (PRI) is pleased to announce that journalists from its daily international news program, "PRI's The World," have received the Overseas Press Club's Lowell Thomas Award, which honors the year's best radio news and interpretation of international affairs. Freelance journalist Sheri Fink with The World's Health and Science Editor, David Baron and The World's Patrick Cox were honored April 28 at the Awards in New York for their series of reports, "Rationing Health: Who Lives? Who Decides?" The stories, reported from South Africa, Great Britain, Zambia and India provided American listeners with real-world examples of how other nations handle - or mishandle -- the challenges of distributing scarce health care resources.

Of the award, David Baron noted, "Every day on 'The World,' we try to make international news relevant to our listeners by showing how events overseas are connected to life in America. That's what we aimed to do with this series -- to provide some lessons for the U.S. at a time of tumult in our health care system. We're thrilled that the series has been recognized by the Overseas Press Club."

This year's win marks the fourth time PRI's The World has received the OPC's top radio award.

As Executive Producer, Sussman will lead the production of the program, including both broadcast and digital components, and its staff, located in Boston, a London bureau and in countries across the globe.

PRI's Senior Vice President of Content, Melinda Ward, says "Andrew Sussman's finely honed global sensibility, developed by over 2 decades in international news, combined with his energy, wit and creativity, makes him the perfect person to lead "The World" in its next phase to expand its reach nationally and internationally, on air and on-line."

Of his new appointment, Sussman says, ""I am thrilled to be The World's new Executive Producer. I have never worked with a better group of people. We all believe passionately in what we do and in the need to engage with the world at large. In today's media landscape, the challenges may be great, but so are the opportunities."

Sussman has been with "PRI's The World" since its inception in 1995, helping American audiences understand how they affect and are affected by world events. Now heard by over 2.5 million weekly listeners on 301 stations nationwide, "The World" has benefitted from Sussman's leadership as show producer, as well as editor and reporter.

Prior to joining "The World," Sussman had oversight responsibilities for a newspaper joint-venture with the Russian daily, Komsomolskaya Pravda, where he managed all aspects of the venture. Subsequent to that, Sussman joined the just-launched English-language daily The Moscow Times as an editor, working with a range of American and foreign reporters, including Russian journalists new to Western-style standards and practices. In 1994, he moved to Paris and joined the newly-formed Europe bureau at Radio France, as a host and reporter.

Born in Denver, Sussman is a graduate of the University of Colorado and was a Nieman Journalism Fellow at Harvard. He is fluent in French and Russian, and lives in Boston.

About Public Radio International
Celebrated as a driver of innovation in public media, PRI was founded in 1983 to diversify and expand the content available on public platforms, enabling U.S. listeners to "hear a different voice" and to connect with one another and the larger world.

Los Angeles, April 19, 2011 – "Smiley & West," the newest program from Public Radio International (PRI) hosted by noted public broadcaster Tavis Smiley and one of America's most provocative intellectuals Cornel West, celebrates its sixth-month anniversary with the pick-up of new stations in Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta and Memphis. After piloting last October and officially launching this February, the one-hour, weekly program is now heard in more than 80 communities across the country, including eight of the Top 10 markets.

After five years of thought-provoking conversations on "The Tavis Smiley Show," Smiley's original weekly radio program, "Smiley & West" integrates their professional and personal relationship and explores the hot issues of the day.

"The huge response that we've received regarding 'Smiley & West' proves that Americans are thirsty for some real dialogue," says Smiley. "It is our continued hope that 'Smiley & West' provides a forum where folks can freely express themselves and at the same time be encouraged, enlightened and empowered by the insightful conversation and the exploration and expansion of ideas."

A fan-favorite segment of the show called "Take 'Em to Task" allows listeners to directly engage with "Smiley & West" when they disagree with something they've said. It is part of the show's commitment to using social media as an interactive tool for Socratic debate.

In the first six months, "Smiley & West" featured in-depth conversations with icons like Morgan Freeman, Laurence Fishburne, Alfre Woodard, Jay-Z, Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai, comedian Garry Shandling and the Grandmaster of Funk George Clinton.

This month, KPCC in Los Angeles added "Smiley & West" to its Friday night schedule. Los Angeles' KPFK added "Smiley & West" late last year. The program is now heard across all of southern California, from Indio to Isle Vista and Palmdale to Poway.

Newark's legendary jazz station, WBGO, becomes "Smiley & West's" second New York area affiliate along with WNYC. This is the first New Jersey affiliate for the program, and marks the first time a Tavis Smiley program has ever been heard on a station in New Jersey.

WCLK in Atlanta and WYPL in Memphis, Tennessee also added "Smiley & West" to their schedules in March, crucial additions for a program dedicated to honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A complete list of stations can be found here.

"Smiley & West" is also available via podcast for those listeners who can't listen to the program in their community, or just prefer the convenience of on-demand.

For additional information about Smiley & West, visit: smileyandwest.com.

Press Contacts:
Joe Zefran, (773) 954 – 6522; jzefran@tavistalks.com
Leshelle Sargent, (323) 953-5758; lsargent@tavistalks.com

###

Washington, D.C., -- February 17, 2011 -- The Center for Public Integrity, Public Radio International and Global Integrity have received $1.5 million in grants to fund an ambitious risk analysis of corruption in all 50 state governments.

Omidyar Network will supply up to $1 million for the 18-month effort and the Rita Allen Foundation has agreed to provide $500,000 in matching funds. The State Accountability Project will hire political reporters in every state capital and rank the 50 states for susceptibility to corruption.

The journalists will assess the existence and effectiveness of anti-corruption and government transparency measures at the state level, including political financing, civil service management and state budget processes. The project team will also create online data, reporting and technology tools to empower citizens to demand greater accountability and reform.

"Some of the most hidden forms of political corruption in this country increasingly occur in state governments," said William E. Buzenberg, executive director for the Center. "The State Accountability Project will rank each state for risk and specifically show where the dangers lie. Then citizens can get involved and insist on improvements from their elected officials."

Public Radio International will work with its 880 partner radio stations to inspire people through crowdsourcing and social media to take part in the project and spread the results. "If we hope to stop corruption, people need to be invested and involved," said Michael Skoler, vice president of interactive media for PRI. "We live in a new media world where people, not simply reporters, can and must be watchdogs for honest government."

Global Integrity will leverage its success in promoting accountability and transparency in 100 countries to ensure states put the analysis to practical use. "There are a number of valuable lessons from other countries that can be brought to bear in the US context when it comes to effective anti-corruption controls in the states," said Global Integrity's Managing Director Nathaniel Heller. "We're optimistic that with the right information at their fingertips, both the public and lawmakers can design effective reforms."

"The Project will bring a much needed focus on our nation's statehouses," said Stacy Donohue, director of investments at Omidyar Network. "In addition to investigative reporting, it will utilize technology to enable citizen engagement on issues of importance to them. Omidyar Network believes when citizens have visibility into government actions they are more likely to participate in the political process, ensure public funds are used wisely and hold government officials to account."

Said Elizabeth Christopherson, president and chief executive officer of the Rita Allen Foundation: "The patriot Thomas Paine noted that dictatorial government only requires ignorance for its support and warned democracy is at risk when the citizenry is not engaged, informed and monitoring the conduct of leaders. As our nation's founders rightly concluded, it is government with something to hide that we must fear the most. The State Accountability Project has the potential to transform the good-government dialogue and spur more ethical and open processes in the various states, and to serve as a model on the national level. The Rita Allen Foundation is delighted and excited to be part of this endeavor."

Since 1990, the Washington, D.C.-based Center has released more than 475 investigative reports and 17 books to provide greater transparency and accountability of government and other institutions. It has received the George Polk Award and more than 32 other major journalism awards, including honors from Investigative Reporters and Editors, Online News Association, Overseas Press Club, Society of Environmental Journalists, and Society of Professional Journalists.

LOS ANGELES - "Smiley & West" is ready for takeoff. After a four-month pilot process in more than 60 markets across the country, listeners and stations said "We want more!"

That's why broadcasting icon Tavis Smiley, Smiley Radio Properties and Public Radio International are pleased to announce that "Smiley & West" is now officially a weekly program.

Alisa Miller, President and CEO of Public Radio International says, "Tavis Smiley and Cornel West bring a rare dynamism and authenticity to conversation, and a heart-felt dedication to invite listeners to take part in the exchange of ideas and bring wisdom to thought-provoking topics. Smiley and West underscores PRI's commitment to offer new places to discover our diverse, interconnected world, and to stimulate important conversations in American society, and we are excited to distribute it to audiences nationwide."

What started as an experiment on October 1, 2010 has become an online and offline phenomenon. Co-hosted by Tavis' longtime friend and collaborator, Princeton professor Cornel West, "Smiley & West" is not just a radio program. It's a seven-day-a-week conversation on the Speak Out Network via the website www.smileyandwest.com, social media like Twitter and Facebook, and an "old-fashioned" Speak Out Network hotline.

Each week Smiley & West engage in deep dialogue in the "Hot Stuff" as they dissect the hottest news of the moment. Listeners get to turn the tables in the "Take 'Em To Task" segment and challenge Smiley & West on something they said. The second half of the show features "icons and issues", in-depth, 30-minute conversations with legendary leaders, artists and thinkers - and folks on the front lines of issues close to the hearts of Smiley & West.

In just the first four months, Smiley & West spoke with comedian Garry Shandling, bluesman Buddy Guy, Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai, funkmaster George Clinton and playwright Suzan-Lori Parks. They also tackled issues like mass incarceration with law professor Michelle Alexander, education reform with Teach for America founder Wendy Kopp, the Great Recession with former Labor Secretary Robert Reich, healthcare reform with HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Haiti with author Edwidge Danticat and the mid-term elections with New York Times columnist Frank Rich.

In celebration of Tavis Smiley's 20 years in broadcasting, "Smiley & West" is the latest innovation in a long, distinguished career in television, radio, publishing and new media.

A common theme to emerge during the pilot process was the need for a movement. A movement built on the ideas, morality, and spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., bending in the direction of social justice. "Smiley & West" is a virtual meeting place for that movement, putting the "public" back in public radio. The program's listeners reflect the multicultural, multiracial, multiethnic audience of the 21st Century.

"Smiley & West" can already be heard in more than 80 communities across the country including major markets like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philly and San Francisco. An aggressive carriage strategy for 2011 will build on the energy created by the 20th anniversary celebrations for Tavis Smiley and public events with Smiley & West.

Smiley & West also have more than 200,000 Twitter followers and more than 150,000 Facebook fans which allows this program to bring together its radio and new media audiences in a unique and engaging way.

Join the ongoing conversation known as "Smiley & West" and help write America's next chapter. Each Friday afternoon, a new program is available to stream at smileyandwest.com or download as a podcast. Use this map and calendar to see the list of public radio stations carrying the one-hour program.

His writing, speaking, and teaching weave together the traditions of the black Baptist Church, progressive politics, and jazz. The New York Times has praised his "ferocious moral vision." Currently the Class of 1943 Professor at Princeton University, Dr. West burst onto the national scene in 1993 with his bestselling book, Race Matters, a searing analysis of racism in American democracy. Race Matters has become a contemporary classic, selling more than half a million copies to date.

MINNEAPOLIS, August 23, 2010 -- Public Radio International (PRI) announces the launch of its 'Innovator-in-Residence' Program to accelerate its growth as a digital media company. The program is inviting technology and social media start-ups with a public service mission to share PRI's new world headquarters for three months or longer.

Employees of 'Innovator-in-Residence' organizations become PRI Innovation Fellows. The fellows receive regular advice and business counsel from PRI executives, introductions to media and business leaders, and access to PRI facilities and expertise. In return, the fellows provide PRI with access to their ideas, software and content.

The program builds upon PRI's leadership in public media by forging forward-thinking partnerships with like-minded visionaries.

"In an environment where new ideas and technology are constantly disrupting our business, we have decided to bring that disruption into the heart of our work and culture at PRI," said Alisa Miller, PRI President and CEO. "Public media in general has had trouble attracting the nimble risk capital we need to lead in the new media landscape. This program is a new collaborative way for PRI to gain intellectual capital and resources by sharing ours."

The first Innovator-in-Residence recipient is Instant Automatic. Based in San Francisco and Minneapolis, Instant Automatic creates and develops new communication and content technologies that connect and advance real-world interaction through the mobile web.

"We're thrilled to be the first 'Innovator-in-Residence' at PRI," says Geoffrey LeMond, Instant Automatic founder. "It's a real vote of confidence in our ideas and market potential. And our mission -- to build innovative mobile tools that merge the Internet and real-world in a seamless fashion -- is a perfect fit with PRI's goal to connect people to ideas, places and each other."

Michael Skoler, PRI's VP of interactive media says, "Instant Automatic has developed a completely new approach to how mobile phones, content, location and social networking can be combined. By encouraging their success, we're advancing PRI's goal of designing new digital services that will delight public radio producers, stations and fans alike."

About Public Radio International
Celebrated as a driver of innovation in public media, PRI was founded in 1983 to diversify and expand the content available on public platforms, enabling U.S. listeners to "hear a different voice" and to connect with one another and the larger world.

Washington, DC, June 14, 2010 -- Public radio and television have kicked off an ambitious effort to develop a digital distribution network that will allow public broadcasters and web producers to combine, create, share and distribute their news and cultural content.

The effort is being spearheaded by five national producers: American Public Media, NPR, PBS, Public Radio International (PRI) and the Public Radio Exchange (PRX). It was announced today by NPR President and CEO Vivian Schiller at the Wired Business Conference on behalf of the partners.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) has provided nearly $1 million over the next six months to create development plans and a working prototype of what the partners are calling the Public Media Platform (PMP). NPR is administering the grant that will fund the planning phase. Fully developed, the PMP will serve as a powerful technology backbone enabling today's non-compatible systems to connect, allowing for unprecedented access and flow of content.

The goal is to develop a broad digital network that will invite and support innovative uses of public media content, and match - or exceed - the impact of public radio and television today. Currently 37 million people listen to public radio stations every week, experiencing a seamless mix of local, national and international news, and music largely neglected by commercial radio. Public TV educates, entertains and informs over 118 million viewers every month.

The PMP will allow public media producers – and potentially others outside public media – to combine their content in a shared platform and make it available for a wide variety of public uses, from news sites to educational curricula.

At the core of the PMP is an open Application Programming Interface (API) that will simplify the task of sharing, combining and distributing news and educational content to member organizations and the general public. It will be available to established organizations such as the five public media partners, as well as public radio and TV stations, independent producers, and non-traditional, mission-focused content creators and developers who see value in aligning their efforts with public broadcasting. Ultimately, it will fuel the delivery of more quality news and programming that engages and informs communities. Some of the uses of the PMP include mobile apps, third party sites (from major news aggregators to niche websites), blogs, mash-ups, and widgets.

The PMP is bringing a group of innovative advisors to the table to offer their ideas and expertise on how to best serve audiences, communities and users of the PMP. An Advisory Council will meet regularly over the next six months alongside the PMP leadership team.

The Council, with more members to be named soon, consists of leaders from public radio and television and mission driven technology and journalism organizations: Document Cloud, iTVs, KPBS, KQED, Louisville Public Media, Mashery, Miro, National Black Programming Consortium, North Country Public Radio, the Station Resource Group, and WGBH.

About the PMP Partners

The PMP partners bring a distinctive and complementary set of assets to this endeavor and a track record in digital innovation and collaboration. When they are linked together, they will achieve a critical mass of compelling content that will inform and enrich the lives of more people in more ways.

American Public Media is the nation's second-largest producer of public radio programs, reaching 16 million listeners each week with mainstays such as A Prairie Home Companion, Marketplace, and Speaking of Faith. As the parent organization of Minnesota Public Radio, Southern California Public Radio and Classical South Florida, American Public Media brings station management leadership and experience in launching ground-breaking projects such as the Public Insight Network and the Public Radio Tuner.

CPB is a private, nonprofit corporation created by Congress in 1967 and is steward of the federal government's investment in public broadcasting. It helps support the operations of more than 1,100 locally-owned and -operated public television and radio stations nationwide, and is the largest single source of funding for research, technology, and program development for public radio, television and related online services.

NPR is public radio's largest producer, an influential force in American life. In collaboration with more than 880 independent public radio stations nationwide, NPR strives to create a more informed public – one challenged and invigorated by a deeper understanding and appreciation of events, ideas and cultures. NPR was among the first media organizations to launch a comprehensive API (application program interface) which powers NPR.org and other public radio sites, an innovation that has made the rapid development of NPR and public radio applications possible.

PBS with its nearly 360 member stations, offers all Americans — from every walk of life — the opportunity to explore new ideas and new worlds through television and online content. Each month, PBS reaches more than 118 million people through television and nearly 21 million people online, inviting them to experience the worlds of science, history, nature and public affairs; to hear diverse viewpoints; and to take front row seats to world-class drama and performances. PBS' premier children's TV programming and its website, pbskids.org, are parents' and teachers' most trusted partners in inspiring and nurturing curiosity and love of learning in children. PRI brings a successful track record of leading and managing complex, multi-partner projects and experience creating and distributing innovative content; PRI was also the founder of Public Interactive, now under NPR's management, a provider of digital tools and technology to move than 300 public media stations.

PRX is public media's digital network, pioneering new paths in content and technology, and serving as the largest aggregator of independent and station-produced content in public media.

*EDITOR'S NOTE: Get a PMP concept graphic here.

See examples of potential uses of PMP here.

###

Media Contacts:

NPR: Danielle Deabler, 202.360.7492

American Public Media: Bill Gray, 651.290.1543

CPB: Tim Isgitt, 202.879.9812

PBS: Jan McNamara, 703.739.5028

PRI: Julia Yager, 612.330.9231

PRX: Rekha Murthy, 617.576.5455 x 117

American Public Media

“As the nation's largest public radio station operator and second-largest public radio programming producer, American Public Media is proud to collaborate in launching the Public Media Platform.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

MINNEAPOLIS, June 3, 2010 — Public Radio International (PRI) announces a partnership with Mobile Commons whose acclaimed mobile messaging platform will enable PRI listeners to interact with its content via mobile SMS. PRI and Mobile Commons will begin allowing users to text and receive text messages from PRI's "The World," an award-winning, daily global news magazine co-produced by BBC World Service, PRI and WGBH Radio Boston; and "The Takeaway," an innovative morning drive news show produced by PRI and WNYC, New York Public Radio, in editorial collaboration with the BBC, the "New York Times" and WGBH. In addition, users will also be able to interact with PRI via text.

Given the high use of texting by communities of color and by people in a wide range of issue-focused groups, the partnership enables PRI and its programs to connect, interact and respond to its audiences on an entirely new level. Users will be able to text answers to questions posed on-air and online, as well as submit comments to the shows from their phones. They can also text to receive notifications of upcoming stories and various interviews of note. Reporters from "The World" and "The Takeaway" will also be able to use the texting community to crowdsource content for stories.

PRI Executive Vice President of Operation and Strategy Cory Zanin says, "Mobile Commons is an ideal partner for PRI. Their technologies enable us to meet the needs of current and new listeners on their preferred platform and to expand our service by satisfying growing areas of interest as they evolve. It's an innovative way to address our mission of providing information, insights and cultural experiences essential to living in our diverse, interconnected world."

Jed Alpert, Mobile Commons founder, adds, "PRI has innovation in its DNA, and we are extremely proud to be working with them. By integrating mobile communications into its existing huge reach and breadth of content, PRI will be able to meaningfully engage with its listeners on an ongoing two-way basis, no matter the format or subject. Mobile is the most prevalent form of communications in the country and bridges all communities."

MINNEAPOLIS, May 24, 2010 — Public Radio International (PRI) announces the appointment of Michael Skoler to the position of vice president of Interactive Media. In this capacity, Skoler will identify, develop and implement interactive strategies for the creation, distribution and engagement of PRI content. Skoler assumes his duties on June 1.

Senior Vice President of PRI Content Melinda Ward says, "It's a rare serendipity to discover the ideal alignment of our strategic vision with a candidate's unique skill set, but that's exactly what happened here. Michael is a true innovator, and his pioneering approach to interactive media and global journalism will thrive at PRI. I look forward to seeing the impact his vision will have on PRI's future."

Of his new role at PRI, Skoler says, "I've learned that culture is even more important than strategy for success in today's networked media world. He served as Africa Bureau Chief for National Public Radio in Nairobi, Kenya, and as a science correspondent and science editor/producer in Washington, DC. Skoler has been a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, a Frank Batten Fellow at the University of Virginia and, last year, a Donald W. Reynolds Fellow studying new business models for media at the Missouri School of Journalism.

His work has won many awards: International Dialogues for Thought Leaders in Media/Journalism, Images and Voices of Hope; Inaugural Knight News Innovation EPpy for Public Insight Journalism; Batten Award for Innovations in Journalism for Public Insight Journalism; Joe Alex Morris Memorial Lecturer, Nieman Foundation, Harvard University; duPont-Columbia Silver Baton for coverage of the Rwandan genocide; Robert F. Kennedy Award for international reporting; and others. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Harvard University, Skoler went on to earn an MBA from the University of Virginia's Darden Graduate School of Business. He resides in St. Paul.

About Public Radio International®
Celebrated as a driver of innovation in public media, PRI was founded in 1983 to diversify and expand the content available on public platforms, enabling U.S. listeners to "hear a different voice™" and to connect with one another and the larger world.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

MINNEAPOLIS, May 20, 2010 — Public Radio International (PRI) announces that PRI President and CEO Alisa Miller has been honored with a 2010 Women in Business Award by the Minneapolis-St. Paul "Business Journal." Miller was named with 24 other women in the Industry Leaders category, honoring professional women who have emerged as leaders in their respective industries. The winners are recognized for their track record of success, as well as their involvement in the community. Award ceremonies are being held today at the Hilton in downtown Minneapolis.

Of receiving the Women in Business Award, Miller says, "I am both humbled and honored to be in the company of women who power some of our region's and the nation's strongest businesses. PRI leads by embracing innovation and partnerships, and it is very affirming to see that our approach is being acknowledged and recognized."

As president and CEO of PRI, Miller is a respected innovator and visionary in public media who is leading PRI to transform the way Americans use and understand news, information and entertainment to live successfully in our global world.

In a building renamed for PRI, new locale's redesign will fully support PRI's role as innovation leader in public media.

Public Radio International (PRI), creator and distributor of award-winning content ranging from PRI's "The World" to BBC World Service to "This American Life," announces plans to relocate to the former Textile Building, renamed Public Radio International and located in the creative hub of downtown Minneapolis' historic Warehouse District. Capitalizing on PRI's national reputation as a catalyst for innovation in public media, the building is being redesigned specifically to support PRI's mission of serving audiences as a distinctive content source in today's diverse, interconnected world. Among its many features will be a multi-media convening venue and broadcast studio, created to bring global perspectives to local and world audiences. Relocation to the building now named for PRI is set for early 2010.

PRI President and CEO Alisa Miller says, "This move will allow us to build on our 26 years of innovation, and do so in an area of the city that is dynamic and growing. We'll be able to bring global perspectives to Minnesotans in very immediate and practical ways because of our new facility. And we look forward to showcasing the Twin Cities as a global community through our public space, encouraging dialogue and collaboration on issues of global importance."

Mayor of Minneapolis R.T. Rybak says, "PRI is a vital resource for people worldwide as evidenced by its being named 2009 International Corporate Citizen by the Twin Cities-based International Leadership Institute. A force for innovation, PRI has called this great city home since 1990, and we are proud that it will remain an anchor tenant in the heart of downtown for years to come, recognized as a leader in public media."

As chair of the PRI Board of Directors, Linda Larson, partner in the Seattle-based Marten Law Group PLLC, adds, "The Board enthusiastically supports PRI as it expands its influence in the region and the world. For years, pundits have called PRI 'the Twin Cities' best kept secret,' but its new location and the new directions it is poised to take ensure that PRI's reach and impact will be secret no more."

PRI's new home, located at the corner of 2nd Avenue North and Fourth Street, a major downtown inflow route, will daily raise awareness of global issues among millions of commuters through signage and other visual displays, keeping more Minnesotans in touch with the larger world. Plans also include space to showcase PRI hosts and content, and to engage Minnesotans in conversations that connect global issues with local concerns. By pairing in-person engagement with the best that digital technology and social networks have to offer, this public venue will be able to function as vibrantly as a virtual arena as it does a physical space.

About Public Radio International®
Celebrated as a driver of innovation in public media, PRI was founded in 1983 to diversify and expand the content available on public platforms, enabling U.S. listeners to "hear a different voice™" and to connect with one another and the larger world.

CONTACT: Dan Jensen, PRI, 612.330.9212, djensen@pri.org
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

PRI's 'The World' awarded major National Science Foundation grant
Pioneering science, technology content and engagement developed on-air, online

Public Radio International (PRI) announces receipt of a $2.1 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to create leading-edge on-air and online coverage of and engagement with science and technology on PRI's "The World," an award-winning multi-platform global news program co-produced with BBC World Service and WGBH Radio Boston. The three-year grant will support the creation of a new Virtual Science Café, an interactive Web site and associated applications developed in partnership with Sigma Xi, the international research society of scientists and engineers. The grant also will be used to increase the number and diversity of "The World's" science reports, podcasts and online content for the program's 2.3 million listeners and for its online users.

PRI President and CEO Alisa Miller says, "We are honored that the National Science Foundation is making it possible for 'The World' to break new ground and engage Americans with science and technology and its impact on our lives, our country and our world. We are also thrilled to partner with Sigma Xi on this effort. Current and new users will hear from and connect with top scientists and engineers on air, online and on demand to probe more deeply into leading-edge research. It's a wonderful opportunity for the science and engineering community, our journalists and Americans to contribute and interact in new ways."

The NSF grant enables PRI's "The World" to make listeners and Web users more aware of global developments in areas ranging from climate, energy and nanotechnology to technology and security. Working with Sigma Xi, the program’s producers will identify scientists and engineers who can integrate on-air content into online discussions, which they will moderate in "The World's" Virtual Science Café. Listeners can probe additional topics and contribute to the community through insights and robust discussion, greatly expanding the collective learning experience.

NSF Program Officer Sandra Welch says, "This project has great potential to engage millions of Americans in understanding the scientific and technological developments around the world and how these developments shape, and are shaped by, broader global societal forces. We are very excited to support this innovative effort."

PRI's "The World" is a one-hour, weekday multi-platform global news program hosted by Lisa Mullins. Having premiered in April 1996, it is now broadcast on-air and streamed online by 250 PRI affiliate stations, broadcasts that are heard by over 2.3 million listeners nationwide. Podcasts of the show's featured segments are regularly among iTune's top 100. Offering a mix of news, features, interviews and music from around the globe, "The World" is the only American radio program devoted exclusively to providing global journalism for Americans. Support for PRI's "The World" comes from Merck, the Medtronic Foundation and the Capital Group Companies; by grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the National Science Foundation; and by the PRI Program Fund, whose contributors include the Ford Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

About Public Radio International®
Founded in 1983, Public Radio International leads media by producing, acquiring and distributing innovative content that enables U.S. audiences to "hear a different voice," bringing new voices, global journalism and cultural perspectives to the American public.
