America, the beautiful, and the melting pot for many cultures. "Afropop
Worldwide" collected some of its best reports on the people and places that
help this nation rock with rhythm: New York, Detroit, Chicago and New Orleans.
On this edition: music and stories from New York and Detroit.
New York
New York is a crossroads of Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican and other Latin
musicians. "Afropop" goes back to the early 1960's in New York for some
precursors of what came to be called "salsa." Johnny Pacheco shares his
memories from back in the day.
Detroit
Dearborn Michigan, right next to Detroit, is home to Ford Motor Company and
also the largest Arab American community in the U.S. This segment features
Doris Farhat, a singer from Lebanon, and music from the Eigth Annual Arab
International Festival in the city.
A one-hour weekly showcase of music and information from Africa, the Caribbean,
and the Americas, "Afropop Worldwide" blends a rich array of global music with
lively interviews and insightful stories on world-class talents and the music
