FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Public Radio International® Announces Liberty Mutual is Founding Sponsor of
'The Takeaway with John Hockenberry & Adaora Udoji'
Partnership synergies will stimulate national conversation on important issues
MINNEAPOLIS and BOSTON, April 25, 2008 — Public Radio International (PRI) is proud to announce that Liberty Mutual is the exclusive, founding sponsor of "The Takeaway," a new morning drive program designed to expand and enrich the American dialogue on key local, national and global issues. Unique in public media, "The Takeaway" is a co-production of PRI and WNYC ® developed in collaboration with BBC World Service, the "New York Times" and WGBH Radio Boston.
Liberty Mutual is sponsoring the program as part of its campaign to promote The Responsibility Project, which uses online content, independently produced short films and television programming to create a forum for people to discuss personal acts of responsibility.
"It's rare," says Julia Mears, PRI Vice President Brand Management and Marketing Strategy, "to find two projects that so fully complement one another, despite being developed independently. Our respective projects and content will help make the ideas and ideals under discussion vivid and more concrete, and will bring different voices and perspectives into the conversation. We are proud to partner with Liberty Mutual to advance the national dialogue."
Liberty Mutual Senior Vice President, Communications, Steve Sullivan adds, "Liberty Mutual has identified a trend among our prospects and customers – a large percentage of Americans who consider personal responsibility to be a core value. Programs like ‘The Takeaway’ and The Responsibility Project are catalysts that spark conversation about topics that are important to the public. We’re excited at the opportunity to support such new, dynamic programming created for public radio listeners.”
Using independently produced short films, online content and television programming, The Responsibility Project is a catalyst for examining the decisions that confront people trying to “do the right thing.” Individuals interested in joining the conversation on personal responsibility can participate in online conversations and watch live-action and animated film shorts on The Responsibility Project’s online community, www.ResponsibilityProject.com. Individuals who register on the site have the opportunity to enter the discussion on personal responsibility by responding to blogs, participating in a survey, creating a widget to link to other social networking sites and signing-up for regular content updates.
"The Takeaway with John Hockenberry & Adaora Udoji" is a landmark morning drive-time news program for public radio, designed to advance a truly authentic American conversation by reflecting and attracting more of America to public media. The program continues PRI's commitment to providing Americans with global and cultural perspectives available no where else in broadcast. In partnership with WNYC and journalistic icons BBC World Service, the "New York Times" and WGBH Radio Boston, the live, conversational news program is poised to transform morning drive-time listening and news nationwide. It is co-hosted by Emmy and Peabody Award-winning journalist John Hockenberry and award-winning international and legal journalist Adaora Udoji.
"The Takeaway" will debut nationally on Monday, April 28. Additional support for "The Takeaway" comes from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
