'The Detroit Symphony Orchestra' premieres on PRI

MINNEAPOLIS, March 31, 2008 — Public Radio International (PRI) announces the national launch of "The Detroit Symphony Orchestra," a 13-week concert series produced by WRCJ-FM. The two-hour concerts showcase the nation's fourth-oldest symphony orchestra performing in the acoustically rich, historic Orchestra Hall at the Max M. Fisher Music Center in downtown Detroit. "The Detroit Symphony Orchestra" is now available to PRI affiliate stations nationwide for broadcast and simulcast streaming.
"Live performances by truly great orchestras can be highly valuable to classical music listeners and strengthen a public radio station's credibility in many ways," says PRI's Michael Arnold, director of Content Strategy and Development. "The DSO is a premier orchestra, and under the direction of the eminent Leonard Slatkin, its extraordinary contributions to the genre continue. We are very pleased to make the DSO concert season available nationally."
WRCJ Program Director David Wagner says, "It's an exciting time for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and their new Music Director Leonard Slatkin. With the refurbished Orchestra Hall and the new Max M. Fisher Music Center complex, Detroit Symphony Orchestra broadcasts will bring energy and excitement to public radio stations in a 13-week series. With support from the Kresge Foundation and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, "The Detroit Symphony Orchestra" comprises weekly concerts by one of the nation's most acclaimed orchestras. The 13 two-hour programs are hosted by Music Director Leonard Slatkin and feature repertoire ranging from Respighi to Dutilleux to a special Best of Concertos program. This year's guest artists include pianists Lang Lang and Yefim Bronfman, saxophonist Branford Marsalis, violinists Leila Josefowicz and Nikolaj Znaider, and guest conductors Peter Oundjian, Helmuth Rilling and Rafael Fruehbeck de Burgos among others. On-air and online audiences will enjoy Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43," Kernis' "Newly Drawn Sky," Ravel's "Une Barque sur l'Ocean," Dutilleux's "Tout un monde lointain" and Mahler's "Symphony No. 2" among other works.
