In the South Caucasus, neighboring countries Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought two wars in the years since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The conflict was about the status of Nagorno-Karabakh, a majority-ethnic Armenian region inside Azerbaijan. In September, Azerbaijan’s military seized Nagorno-Karabakh, which resulted in the displacement of tens of thousands of Armenians. Now, the two countries are engaged in peace talks.
